Getting it Right: Catholic Federal Credit Union

Name: Catholic Federal Credit Union
Assets: $309,275,805
Members:  26,631
Website: www.cathfcu.com
Facebook

With Google and a new microsite on their side, Catholic Federal Credit Union’s latest inspiring campaign is helping them grow wallet share. CU Love Thy Neighbor is using a microsite to ask people how they’d help their neighbors with $5 from Catholic Federal. Everyone who participated was entered into a $1,000 drawing. In the first three weeks more than one hundred participants submitted stories, videos or photographs in response.

Successfully working in tandem with this campaign is a Google AdWords program that CU Solutions Group is heading. It targets people searching for checking accounts and directs them to the campaign’s microsite. The leads generated from this campaign are growing daily and the AdWords cost per conversion rate is lowering each day as well.

Catholic Federal factored in current member and potential member behavior when creating their campaign – the fact that more and more people hit the Web first to check rates and apply for membership or loans. They have also worked with CU Solutions Group to review their website’s SEO and usability. The credit union is using all of these online tools and information to tweak their marketing and website as they go. As far as future plans, they’re going to continue monitoring and adjusting their efforts to garner the best results.

Building a Better Online Community for Your Credit Union

Look up “community” in the dictionary and it’s defined as “an interacting population of individuals.” Nowhere is this truer than with your credit union’s online community. An online community consists of your Facebook, Twitter and Google+ pages as well as your credit union’s blog or forum. Your credit union may have one, some or none of these depending on what stage you’re on in building your community.

Your credit union may not even be sure it needs an online community. With things like customer service or social media, it’s sometimes hard to easily identify how they contribute to revenue or wallet share. While it’s easy to get wrapped up in retweets, likes and post comments, these do not equate ROI. Building your online community does promote member engagement and retention as well as build brand awareness. These factors could lead to a boost in revenue and wallet share – as well as improve member service efficiency and reduce marketing and member service costs.

Fostering Relationships

Put your online community to good use and foster relationships with any community members that stand out and are loyal to your credit union. Reward these community builders with discounts or private product/service releases. These members are your greatest asset to grow your online community and should be treated accordingly.

The Internet is now as influential as friends and family when it comes to consumers’ buying decisions. So, having a strong online community could potentially answer member questions, address member concerns and help members make solid financial decisions. And if done correctly, will lead to an increase in wallet share, revenue and overall member good will.

Help Members Grow Their Wallets: The Credit Union Member Discount Program Checklist

Unlike other financial institutions, your credit union has an immediate opportunity to grow share-of-wallet by building on your members’ high level of trust and loyalty. Specifically, establishing a cohesive, easy-to-use member discount program that includes credit card rewards and savings on “big ticket” items. This can broaden the benefits of credit union membership, while giving you another opportunity to showcase your commitment to exceeding members’ expectations.

The member discount program checklist below is designed to help you quickly plan, implement and optimize a program that will strengthen your position as a member-focused institution while generating cross-selling opportunities and non-interest income.
  • Take Inventory: What types of discounts from local and national companies does your credit union currently offer via your website and branches?

  • Identify Key Stakeholders and Objectives: What department(s) currently offer member discounts? Do these departments coordinate the discount offers? Are the offers tied back to strategic objectives such as cross-selling core loan products and driving increased traffic to online banking?

  • Find Your Discounts: Is there a central location on your website that provides information about all of your discounts? How do your members learn about the discounts? Are your discounts easy to find?

  • Ensure a Positive Member Experience: Are the discounts current and simple for members to access and redeem? Are the discounts competitive with other financial institutions and member-based organizations? Is there a clear member support process for resolving redemption or product/service issues?

  • Update, Optimize, Promote and Measure Your Program: Are there existing discounts that need to be updated or removed? Are there additional, turnkey discounts that should be added? Does your website effectively communicate and promote the discounts? Are you taking advantage of your member communications (e.g., newsletters, emails, statement inserts and Web banners) to build awareness about the discounts? Have you established metrics to measure the results of your program?
The Invest in America team has helped hundreds of credit unions work through the member discounts program checklist and we recognize that your credit union might not have the resources to implement and manage a robust program.

To help get you started or take your current program to the next level, we have developed a full range of turnkey programs with free marketing collateral and Web design that include discounts from trusted U.S.-based companies like GM, Sprint, Dell and Intuit. 5 Signs Your Credit Union Needs a Member Analysis

No matter the organization, it’s common to cruise on the “business as usual” mode dealing with the day-to-day work without thinking about the big picture. Without thinking of ROI or overall effectiveness. But chances are, when you do look up you’ll discover that your results aren’t what they used to be.

If this is the case at your credit union (no worries, we don’t judge), then it might be time to consider taking a step back to evaluate your current status with credit union member analytics. It’s easier and more affordable to grow from the membership base you currently have than to woo new members. Plus, the data you collect from member analytics can help you make more concrete marketing decisions.

Still not sure member analytics are for you? To help you decide, we have five signs your credit union may need a member analysis.
  1. The credit union down the street always seems busier than yours.

Does it seem like the competition, whether it’s a nearby bank or credit union, always has a leg up? That they’re always one step ahead with membership, marketing and revenue? It seems like you offer the same products and services and competitive rates – so what gives?

Member analytics can help you identify where your credit union’s growth opportunities truly are. You can uncover which marketing segments you have already strongly penetrated and which ones have room for growth. Credit union member analysis can give you the details you need to make improvements and keep your branches busy.

  2. You’re not sure who your most or least active members are.

Sure, your credit union wants to retain those members who hold the majority of its assets – but do you know who these members are? Our credit union experience has found that for most credit unions, those with the largest amount of assets make up a small percentage of its actual membership. On the flip side, you should also determine who your least active members are so you can target them for increased wallet share.

Knowing which members you want to focus on retaining and those who need to increase their activity is all possible with member analysis. This data can also help you better focus your marketing dollars where they’re needed and avoid sending the same messaging to all members – who aren’t necessarily in the market for the same products or services.

  3. Most of your members use only one product and/or service.

It’s no secret that it’s significantly easier to expand a relationship with a current member than it is to gain a new one. The ultimate goal, of course, is to be your members’ primary financial institution for everything from checking and savings accounts to loans and investments. And the more products/services your members use, the less likely they are to stray.

The best way to meet all your members’ financial needs is to first discover what those needs are. Not to sound like a broken record, but a credit union member analysis is the best, most effective way to find out what makes your members tick and uncover their level of commitment to your credit union. Member analytics will have the answers.

  4. You’re looking to market to Gen Y, but don’t know where to begin.

Sure, Gen Y (anyone born in the mid-80s to mid-2000s) is the coveted demographic to target – but what’s the best way to approach them?

To start, find out the size of your current Gen Y credit union membership. You may already have a substantial portion of your membership fitting this age range and don’t even realize it. Member analytics can break down your membership not only into age ranges but income levels as well. Instead of targeting new Gen Y members, you may only need to cultivate the ones your credit union already has.

  5. Your last marketing campaign wasn’t as successful as you thought it’d be.

If yours is one of the credit unions that benefitted from Bank Transfer Day and all of its afterglow, your recent focus may have been on growing new membership. Instead of, or in addition to, marketing to new members you may want to contemplate cross-selling to your existing members.

To effectively market to your current members you need to harness the power of member data. It will help you uncover vital information like how much they can afford, their level of loyalty and what communities you’re actually reaching. Member analysis will help uncover this vital information and help better position your efforts with any upcoming marketing campaigns.

You’ve Got the Power

Your credit union already has the power to connect with its members and grow its wallet share – the power of data. Member analytics can help give you a better understanding of the average age, income, home ownership and ethnic make-up of the communities you serve.

Everything you need to know about your membership is already there, you just might need some help uncovering and interpreting it. CU Solutions Group’s marketing research experts can perform a custom member analysis, at almost any budget, for your credit union to help it tap into its power.

A Plan of Action

It’s that time of year when marketers everywhere are sitting down to build next year’s marketing plan. They’re pulling out their strategic plans and identifying the goals they’re going to tackle for 2012. And they’re asking these questions: What is it that our members want and need from us? What can we do to get them to use our products and services more? We understand that you know your members intimately, but if you’re anecdotally defining their needs, it may be time to verify your beliefs through marketing research.

You can use marketing research to assist you in accomplishing your most challenging goals, including:

  • New membership growth
  • Increasing wallet share and retention
  • Improving member service
  • Assessing member loyalty
  • Measuring member overall satisfaction
  • Identifying new products or services

You have the ability to reach your goals by finding out what your members are thinking and doing through the use of member surveys, focus groups, member analytics and website analytics.

  • Member surveys are a great tool to provide insight into member loyalty and to help improve member satisfaction. Member surveys can be done via mail, telephone or online. Although online surveys are growing, mail surveys still tend to have the highest return rate.

  • Focus groups allow you to dig deeper into your members’ thoughts and desires about their banking needs and your credit union. Credit unions typically utilize focus groups when they are exploring a big change like introducing a new name or brand. This type of research can be expensive, but the insights you gain are well worth the effort.

  • Member analytics are a wonderful tool that provides an in-depth analysis of your current membership. The reports provide a thorough understanding of your membership, which in turn gives you insight into wallet share growth, retention strategies and member loyalty. When developing marketing strategies, a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of your membership is a valuable tool. This is also a great place to start when you build a member loyalty program or a rewards program.

  • SEO and website analytics are tools used to effectively drive traffic to your website and to help you evaluate the behavior of website visitors. By tracking visitor behavior with website analytics, you can put more emphasis on the keywords and sources that bring the visitors you want to your website.

According to CUNA, one in three credit unions conduct member surveys in-house, especially those with assets of $50 million or below. For the credit unions that have the staff time, expertise and software available, this can be a very cost-effective way to manage your research.

For those that don't, most marketing research providers can customize their services to match most budgets and they have the tools and resources to accurately and informatively analyze the data. They also can provide your credit union benchmark data from other credit unions to compare to your results. If you decide to outsource, Marketing Solutions has marketing research experts that can work with your credit union on all or just a portion of your research endeavors.

Before you venture down this road of marketing research, keep in mind that you shouldn’t ask what your members want if you don’t intend to act. Their answers might make you realize that some of your products and services aren’t as popular as you think or that your member service isn’t reaching its potential. Your credit union needs to be prepared to really assess and explore survey results and be willing to shift its strategy where needed to not only help you reach your goals, but to give your members what they want and need.
