What Credit Unions Should Look For When Hiring a Teller

Is your credit union looking to hire some new tellers? It can be challenging to find the right person for such a demanding job. When it comes to finding a teller, there are a few things you should consider. Here are nine things to look for in your next teller.
  • Savvy member service skills – A good teller will be friendly, helpful, courteous and patient while helping their members. The teller will have to be able to pay attention and assess the needs of the member and quickly to find the solution.
  • Excellent math skills – While a lot of the banking world is automated, strong math skills are still very important for a good teller to have.
  • Attention to detail – A teller has to verify a lot of member information in a short amount of time to remain efficient; from verifying member identification to counting money throughout the day. Attention to detail is also important in the unfortunate event of a robbery.
  • Able to deliver speedy service – Providing a high level of service is important, but so is being quick. Members want to get in and out in a timely manner.
  • Multitasker – A teller has to do so much at any given time – provide excellent member service, process loan payments, make deposits and withdrawals from multiple accounts – all in one transaction. All of this needs to be done while maintaining a friendly attitude.
  • Understanding discretion – Tellers handle a lot of personal information that needs to be controlled properly. A great teller needs to understand the importance of being discreet with member information and treat all transactions with confidentiality for the sake of the member as well as the credit union.
  • Computer skills – Other than counting money, a teller will spend the majority of their time working with a computer. Computer skills are key for tellers to be able to understand how the system works to be able to a quick and efficient teller.
  • Patience – Being a great teller involves a lot of patience. Dealing with many people – day in and day out – with something as important as their money can be a high stress environment.
  • Communication skills – Tellers need strong communication skills but also strong listening skills. They must have a complete understanding of service charges, account histories, interest rates and branch locations. A teller needs to be able to communicate well with not just the members but also managers and co-workers.
These are just some of the basic skills a good teller needs to have to be successful at the job.
